Hidden in the Hills:
In my travels across the East Tennessee Region, I rarely get the opportunity to be overwhelmed when visiting a new site for the first time, because all our golf courses in East Tennessee are just unique in the way they fit the land.
Today was a surprise, as I drove onto the vast property at Graysburg Hills Golf Course with my faithful golf group in tow, we are booked for 27 holes of the most challenging golf we have had in front of us for quite some time.
Let me say first that you think you’re off the beaten path, but, it’s the best short drive I bet you will have in a while, winding through beautiful farmlands and mountain valleys and located just a few miles off of Interstate 81 at exit 44.
(Graysburg Hills is located at the 12 Mile Marker on St. Route 93, Northeast of Greenville, Tennessee. They are approximately 5 miles South of Interstate 81 minutes from the Tri-Cities. From the Interstate, take Exit 44 and follow the Attraction signs.)
Graysburg Hills Golf Course has a 4½ Star Rating – Places to Play Guide by Golf Digest Magazine and is nestled in one of the most scenic regions of the East Tennessee foothills. The course is highly respected for its grooming and maintenance standards, friendly atmosphere, personal service, and reasonable rates. No pretense here, just great golf at an affordable price.
I agree with Golf Digest Magazine and it is at least a 4 star if not a five today.
They offer complete practice facilities with 2 putting greens, a practice sand bunker, a chipping green and large grass practice tees. If I was looking for a place to host my event this would be the place to get folks out to relax and enjoy all that nature and the staff’s hard work has provided here at this facility.
This place is hurt your eyes green!
Trust me when I tell you, you will not be disappointed with the 27-hole layout here and I can assure you that your shot making will be tested throughout the many tree-lined turns and uphill layouts. Shot placement is key here to score well and I won’t bore you with my experience and challenge today, but I can only tell you that everybody in my group today asked when are we coming back.
Graysburg Hill’s 27-hole course is a family owned and operated course which opened for play in 1978. The Knobs and Fodderstack Nines were designed by Rees Jones, recognized today as one of America’s leading golf course architects. The Chimney Top Nine was designed by Edward Lawrence Packard and opened for play in 1994.
I have been here many times off and on throughout my years of playing this game, and I don’t ever remember this golf course being this perfect.
The course has bent grass greens, Riviera Bermuda grass fairways, a continuous golf cart path system thorough out the 27-hole course. There are 100 sand bunkers and six water hazards to challenge your accuracy and skill.
